Akshay Tritiya and importance of Daan Akshay Tritiya, one of the most important festivals falls on tritiya tithi of Shukla paksha, Vaishakh month. This festival holds equal importance from Jyotish point of view. On this day, Sun, Moon and Venus are exalted, sun in Aries sign, Moon in Taurus and Venus in Pisces sign. The two luminaries, being in special position makes it even more auspicious, and Venus which signifies luxury and wealth in life is also exalted on this particular day. There’s a common notion for celebrating this festival is to purchase gold or silver. On the other hand, in ancient times this festival was more related to importance of anna and donating it. As we know the story of Mahabharata, Bhagwan Surya blessed Draupaudi with Akshay Patra, the vessel in which food never finishes and can feed hundreds of people without getting exhausted. He particularly mentioned rice, which signifies Moon, and being linked to Venus, which is getting exalted in the house of donations. This story beautifully explains the role of all 3 planets in special role on this day. So how does buying something on this day will bring prosperity? And in today’s times when golds prices are sky-high can a common even afford to purchase Gold? Then how are we supposed to celebrate it? It’s very simple, anna daan to the one who need it most on this day will be beneficial, instead of buying Gold and silver. Because they’re not present in their physical form in the universe. We all know rahu and ketu were the Daitya Swarbhanu, who consumed amrita during Samudra manthan by cheating Devtas, and was killed by lord Vishnu’s Sudarshna chakra. Though he had already drank amrita by then, he couldn’t die but his body was divided in to 2 parts Rahu the head, and Ketu the body. If you look at Ketu’s picture, there’s no head and a weapon in the hand, that means it has no senses but is working on the important sense, our sixth sense which is also known as Intuition. This is the reason Ketu is known as karaka of intuition. It creates obstructions in work, and unlike Rahu, Ketu contracts things. Ketu is also the karaka of sukshama jagat, means the subtle world, whatever happens in suksham jagat, it may not occur as a big thing, but it always has a bigger impact on mind. Ketu is extremely hidden, it’s agenda is always hidden but not destruction all the time. It gives the deepest knowledge of spirituality. Venus as we all know is the Guru Shukracharya. It plays most diverse roles in our lives. Venus rules all the refined things in life, it is the karaka of luxury. Shukracharya was a Daitya guru but Mahadev still blessed him with the vidya of Mritak Sanjeevani. Mahadev was always generous to bless his devotees. And Shukracharya was an ardent devotee of Mahadev, Master of profound knowledge. Venus represents femininity, beauty, romance, reproduction, art, and pleasure. In jyotish it is karaka of marriage. It shows the quality of marriage. It rules the second house of rashi chakra, which is the sign of resources, wealth and food, also can be interpreted as Dhana Lakshmi. One of the forms of Devi Laksmi, as she is the goddess of dhan dhanya. Another sign ruled by Venus is Libra, the natural seventh house. It is called as Bhagya Lakshmi, your spouse. Shukra gets exalted in the 12th house, Pisces, Jupiter’s sign, also known as the house of giving. There’s a beautiful story behind it, mentioned in Adi parva of Mahabharata. Kacha was the son of sage Brihaspati. He ordered his son Kacha to go to Shukracharya and learn the knowledge of Sanjeevani. Knowing that Kacha was Brihaspati’s son, Shukracharya accepted him as a disciple regardless of every demon’s disapproval. In acquiring knowledge, Kacha fell in love with Devyani, the daughter of guru Shukracharya. Having hatred towards Kacha, all the demons killed him when Shukracharya was out. When Devyani came to know about Kacha, she requested her father to revive him, which he did. However, Kacha was murdered for the second time alone in the forest. The demons burned his body and mixed his ashes into the wine, and gave it to their Guru to drink. Again, Devyani requested her father, but this time Shukracharya had to sacrifice his own body to resurrect Kacha’s dead body. The sage’s boundless love for her daughter encouraged him to take his own life to revive his daughter’s love. When Kacha returned to life, he used the same Sanjeevani mantra to resuscitate Shukracharya. After this incident, sage Shukracharya prohibited wine from being taken by Brahmins as it destroyed their purity. Moreover, he said drinking wine is a sin that equals killing a brahmin. With this story we get to understand why Shukracharya is exalted in Pisces sign, the sign of giving. Few things we can always keep in mind to protect our Venus from malefic afflictions, for e.g., be mindful of grooming, and wear clean clothes, because Venus represents refined clean things. As we all know, moon is the karaka of water in jyotish. 70% of earth is water and same is the case with our bodies. 70 % of our body comprises of water. And rest 30 % is what we eat. And basically, what we eat is also moon. Moon is the karaka of nurturing; it nurtures us like a mother. Moon also is our mind, as mentioned in the shloka below, our mind creates our body. मनः सृजति वै देहान् गुणानि कर्माणि चात्मनः। तन्मनः सृजते माया ततो जीवस्य संसृतिः॥ (मन ही शरीर, गुण, कर्म और माया का सृजन करता है, जिससे जीव का संसार में बंधन होता है।) Our body is made of what we eat, our food habits, in ayurveda, it is mentioned how our mind is going to be depends on our food habits. Ayurveda divides food in 3 guna, Sattva, Rajas and tamas. Now the same rule applies in jyotish, sattva grahs (Sun, Jupiter) are the benefics, rajas grahas (Moon, Venus, Mercury) are the ones which provide luxury and the last ones are tamas the malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu & Ketu). But moon specifically plays the most important role in our food habits, as moon sitting with any planet will provide us that kind of results. Moon well placed, exalted, own house, gives good eating habits, person will take care of his/her diet and nutrition. Waxing moon gives desire to consume more of junk food, while waning moon activates more sattva, it gives you the desire to eat clean sattvic food. We should be aware how and our food is coming from. This will activate the planet healing instantly. Moon is the fastest moving planet, and any correction in our diet gives quick results.
